Quantum Dot Self-assembly in Growth of Strained-Layer Thin Films: a Kinetic Monte-Carlo Study
نویسنده
چکیده
We use Monte-Carlo simulations to study island formation in the growth of thin semiconducting films deposited on lattice-mismatched substrates. It is known that islands nucleate with critical nuclei of about one atom and grow two dimensionally until they reach a critical size sc, when it is favorable for the islands to become three dimensional. We investigate the mechanism for this transition from two-dimensional(2D) to three-dimensional(3D) growth. Atoms at the edge of 2D islands with the critical size sc become mobile as a result of strain and are promoted to the next level. Edge atoms of the resulting island remain highly strained and are promoted to the higher layers in quick succession. This process of depletion is rapid and occurs at a sharply defined island size. We discuss why this leads to the uniformity seen in self-assembled quantum dots in highly mismatched heteroepitaxy 68.35Bs, 68.55.-a, 68.55Jk, 81.15Aa Typeset using REVTEX

Kinetic Monte Carlo Simulation of Strained Heteroepitaxial Growth with Intermixing
An efficient method for the simulation of strained heteroepitaxial growth with intermixing using kinetic Monte Carlo is presented. The model used is based on a solid-on-solid bond counting formulation in which elastic effects are incorporated using a ball and spring model. While idealized, this model nevertheless captures many aspects of heteroepitaxial growth, including nucleation, surface dif...
متن کاملThermodynamic and kinetic mechanisms in self-assembled quantum dot formation
Heteroepitaxial growth of highly strained structures offers the possibility to fabricate islands with very narrow size distribution, coined self-assembling quantum dots (SAQD). In spite of the high experimental interest, the mechanism of SAQD formation is not well understood. We will show that equilibrium theories can successfully predict the island sizes and densities, the nature and the magni...

A new kinetic Monte Carlo algorithm that efficiently accounts for elastic strain is presented and applied to study various phenomena that take place during heteroepitaxial growth. For example, it is demonstrated that faceted quantum dots occur via the layer-by-layer nucleation of pre-pyramids on top of a critical layer with faceting occurring by anisotropic surface diffusion. It is also shown t...

This study was an attempt to provide a simple solution processed synthesis route for Lead Selenide (PbSe) nanostructure thin films using the chemical bath deposition (CBD) method which is commercially available in inexpensive precursors. In the CBD method, the preparation parameters play a considerable role and determine the nature of the final product formed. Known as two main factors, the eff...
